Learning to type, arguably the most fundamental skill related to computers, can seem like a daunting task. Many typing tutor provide plenty of mundane text and antiquated lessons, but few provide you with an in depth course that not only covers the accepted position of fingers and hands, but teaches you a time tested method of learning.

Choosing the most efficient Typing Tutor
When choosing a typing tutor, there are multiple aspects you should look for.

Price. Is this typing tutor going to cost me more than just my time  ? In the age of web 2.0, you should never spend more than $0.00 for a typing tutor. Thankfully, there are many free options to choose from.

Web based or install. Another great web 2.0 trend is the shift away from downloaded applications to web based applications. Not only can you access web based applications from any computer anywhere, you don’t need to concern about adware or spyware coming with your application.

Structured lessons. An oft unmarked aspect of learning to type is properly structured lessons. If you’re just typing random words and letters, you will learn at a snails pace. A worthwhile tutor will follow a proven method of typing such as touch typing or muscle memory typing.

Following a structured course

Once you’ve decided on your typing tutor of choice, its important that you follow the provided course in the proper order. If you do not base your typing on the basic principle (home row, qwerty, etc) you will be left learning bad finger placement, posture, and will pick up bad habits which are very difficult to unlearn.  Make sure you don’t skip ahead, even if you think you’re typing faster than average. You never know eat you might learn.

Regular practice

I can not stress this enough. Learning to type is the same as any other skill. If you don’t stick to a regular schedule of practice, your fingers will not form the necessary muscle memory required to type fast and accurately. Before you embark on your typing journey, create a schedule that you can stick to such as half an hour, every other day. This will ensure your time spent typing will be used in the best possible way.

You should now be armed with the necessary tools to start your empowering journey to learn to type.
